Arkel Coast Espresso Machine
Description
Arkel Coast Espresso Machine
The Arkel Coast is a Made-in-Portugal dual boiler espresso machine that delivers on both quality build and materials as well as brewing performance. Made from over 95% European parts and assembled in Portugal, the Coast breaks the mold when it comes to prosumer espresso machines.
Housed in nearly all stainless steel with a tasteful glass front panel and touch screen, the Coast is equipped with intuitive controls like a dedicated menu button and steam boiler power switch, making navigation and programming much simpler than other similar machines. Each boiler is made from stainless steel and the brew boiler is regulated via a PID controller for extreme precision. For brewing, the Coast uses a vibration pump and a manually adjustable pressure valve to control pressure from the pump to the boiler.
For programming, both the single and double shot buttons can be set to brew by time with a third manual button. Pre-infusion can also be programmed in both active and passive phases for the single and double shot buttons. The Coast has dedicated backflushing and descaling programs as well as an eco mode. For transport and storage, both boilers have easily accessible drains and the brew group is fitted with a dedicated heating cartridge for a total heatup time of just 12 minutes.
Why You Want the Arkel Coast
Dual Boilers
Under the hood, the Coast houses two stainless steel boilers, a 0.7L boiler for brewing and a 1L boiler for steam. The brew boiler is controlled via a PID and can be set in degree increments to your preferred temperature in Celsius.
The brew boiler is connected directly to the brew group and is equipped with a 150W heating cartridge for rapid heating in addition to the brew water heating element. This reduces brew and steam ready time to just 12 minutes. The group is also equipped with a drain screw to empty the brew boiler for storage or transport.
The steam boiler can be turned on and off independently via a dedicated power switch on the right side of the machine and can be drained like the brew boiler via a dedicated valve on the bottom of the machine.
Manual Needle Valve
The manual needle valve on the Coast is unique as far as manual pressure control is concerned. Arkel positioned the valve between the pump and the boiler, meaning that water pressure is regulated further back in the line than an E61 flow control. The result is less abrupt changes to pressure during extraction, and also improved temperature stability as the introduction of cold water into the boiler is reduced by the needle valve.
Aesthetically, the valve contributes to the Coast's design symmetry with the same shape and positioning as the steam valve located on the opposite side of the machine. One complete turn of the knob can adjust brewing pressure from 9 bar (fully open) to 1.5 bar (fully restricted). Additional control over pressure is available via the adjustable OPV located in the back of the machine next to the water reservoir.
Made in Portugal
Something truly unique about the Coast is its Portuguese origin. Not only is the machine assembled in Portugal, but the majority of its parts are either produced in-house by Arkel or procured from suppliers in the EU with over 95% of the machine being made from European parts. The majority of the Coast's housing is made from stainless steel, save for the front panel which is tastefully accented with hardened glass. The included portafilter and tamper feature wood accenting and are designed in-house by Arkel. Included with the machine are a set of IMS single and double portafilter baskets.
